MINEOLA, N.Y. – Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Hempstead man was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison for a 2020 ambush shooting at an apartment building on Terrace Avenue in Hempstead that left his victim with serious physical injuries.

Arem Rodgers, 51, pleaded guilty before Judge Terence Murphy on September 6, 2022, to charges including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony); and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony). The defendant was sentenced yesterday to 12 years in prison and five years post release supervision.

“This defendant calmly ambushed his victim, firing off 11 rounds in a calculated attempt on the man’s life,” said DA Donnelly. “After being shot seven times, and sustaining serious physical injuries, the victim miraculously survived. Arem Rodgers tried to take a life and will now suffer the consequences of his actions.”

DA Donnelly said on March 6, 2020, at approximately 8:11 p.m. in the vestibule at 107 Terrace Avenue in Hempstead, the defendant fired approximately 11 rounds from a loaded handgun through a glass door, striking a 26-year-old victim seven times in the legs, shoulder, chest, and spine, as he tried to escape. Rodgers then fled the scene to a nearby building.

The victim suffered significant injuries, including damage to major organs, three fractured ribs, and a left lung laceration.

Rodgers was arrested on May 18, 2020, in Mineola by members of the Nassau County Police Department.

Redacted video of the shooting from inside the building can be viewed here.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Investigative Counsel Gregory D. Murphy of the Narcotics, Firearms, & Gangs Bureau. The defendant is represented by William Shanahan, Esq.
